WHO IS MICROWAVE SOFTWARE ?? Microwave Software was founded in 1984, by James J. Lev, at a time when Eagleware was known as "Circuit Busters," and Les Besser was developing COMPACT. Five RF/Microwave circuit design programs, SmithMatch, Sceptre, MStrip+, OptiMatch, and Utilities+, were developed and marketed for use on the Apple II, II+, and IIe operating systems. Two years later, in 1986, the programs were translated into MS-DOS format. In 1991, a sixth program, SData+ was added to complete the suite. Over the next several years Jim established sales offices in europe, the middle east, and asia. His tools were bought and used by many companies worldwide. As history, Jim received his novice class amateur radio license, KN6DGX, in 1953. His first transmitter, built in a "cigar box," used a 6AG7 vacuum tube. He remembers that "it took about 30 feet of wire to build the thing." It worked, but he now cringes in remembrance! He soon upgraded to a General Class amateur license and became K6DGX. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1955 and became an electronics technician. After discharge in 1959, he entered the commercial 2-Way radio field. Quickly "learning the ropes," he advanced to the design of mountain top radio repeaters. Repeaters greatly increased the range of mobile communications back in a time when cell phones did not exist. He had his own amateur radio repeater on Blue Ridge mountain, overlooking the Southern California area, in the late 60's. Its call sign was W6FHF and it operated in the ham radio 2 meter and 450 MHz bands. He acquired a ton of practical experience, but, as yet, had no formal training in mathematics or engineering. So, back to school at age 29 in 1967! He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, (with honors), from California State University at Long Beach, in 1972, and then earned a Master of Science Degree in Microwave Engineering, from Loyola Marymount University, in 1976. His masters thesis was: "Optimal Design with Scattering Parameters." He then took various classes towards a Ph.D. degree while working days as an RF/Microwave engineer. During college days, he published technical articles about amateur 2-way radio in FM, a magazine similar to the present day QST. Advancing to Senior Engineer, and then Design Manager, he authored technical papers in Electronics, (in 1973), and several in Microwaves & RF, (starting in 1984). They are available elsewhere on this web site. During the '80s he met two real microwave CAD pioneers: Les Besser, who founded COMPACT, and Dr. Ulrich Rhode, who later bought COMPACT; both were fine gentlemen with a keen business sense. He met Les at his home in northern California; it was set among tall pine trees. A memorable meeting with "Ulrich" occurred at an IEEE Convention in St. Louis MO where Jim was demonstrating his software to engineers. Ulrich walked up and said, in his heavy german accent: "Ah, my competitor!" Jim replied: "No, Ulrich. You sell to corporations - I sell to the engineers who work for them," and grinned.
